Levamisole

Composition

Each per gram powder contains:

Levamisole Hydrochloride………………….100mg

Description

Levamisole is a synthetic anthelmintic with activity against a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal worms and against lung worms. Levamisole causes an increase of the axial muscle tone followed by paralysis of worms.

Indications

It is indicated for the treatment of Nematode infections caused by worms, sensitive to levamisole, especially pulmonary and gastro-intestinal strongylosis,, ascaridioses, capillariosis, heterakidiosis  and amidostomosis, in cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and fowl.

Precaution

Do not exceed the recommended doses.

Adjust the doses added to the water consumption of the animals.

Do not use in horses, lactating females and egg laying birds (layers).

Dosage & Administration

For oral administration in drinking water or feed

-Fowl: 20 mg of levamisole per 1 Kg bwt. That is 1 g of this powder per 5 Kg bwt. (about 2 g per litre of water)

-Cattle Sheep, goats, pig: 8 mg of levamisole per 10 Kg bwt. (That is 0.40 g of this powder per 5 Kg bwt, using a gun system or mixed with feed

A single treatment should be repeated if necessary 3 to 4 weeks later.

Function

It can selectively inhibit succinate dehydrogenase in parasite’s muscle so as to stop the reduction of succinic acid from fumaric acid. Therefore the parasite’s muscle metabolism lacks of oxygen and leads to decreasing of energy.  Levamisole is also a good alternative in cases of benzimidazole resistance.

Withdrawal Period

Meat: 3 days
