Pharmacological properties:

    Gentamicin is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic with activity against Gram-positeve (e.g. Staphylococci, Streptococci, Corynebacterium spp.) and Gram-negative bacteria.

    In contrast with most other currently used antibiotics, gentamicin exerts pronounced bactericidal activity against several, often multi-resistant, Gram-negative pathogens, such as E. coli, Salmonella spp., Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp. and Pseudomonas spp.

Indications:

    For treatment of infectious diseases, caused by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria susceptible to gentamicin, such as: respiratory tract infections, gastro-intestinal infections (colibacillosis, salmonellosis), uro-genital tract infections, skin- and wound infections, septicaemia, arthritis, omphalitis, otitis and tonsillitis in dogs.

Contra-indications, side effects:

    Overdosing may result in neuromuscular block, especially after intravenous administration and in anaesthetised animals. Use in anaesthetised animals is contra-indicated.

    Nephrotoxic and vestibulotoxic (ataxia) signs may occur, especially after use of large doses and long term treatments. At recommended doses there side effects occur very seldom. Care should be taken, however, in case of an existing renal disturbance and in post-partum cows, especially those with a history of milk fever. Antidote in case of neuromuscular block (curare-like paralysis): calcium infusion or neostigmine.
