Prevention and treatment of postpartum paralysis in dairy goats

The milk goats suffered from postpartum paralysis disease, which is a hidden danger of underlying disease caused by malnutrition in the lambing period, leading to imbalance of calcium and phosphorus ratio in the body. It is characterized by weakness of limbs, sleepiness, difficulty in getting up on the ground and walking. If prevention and treatment are delayed, dystocia and postpartum paralysis will be combined. The disease must be mainly prevented by:

1. Do a good job of reproductive health care of pregnant sheep in winter, and prevent the disease at the initial stage.

In winter, there is a lack of green fodder. Silage, malt, vegetable leaves, carrots, etc. can be supplemented. Energy feed (bran, corn, barley flour, etc.

In sunny days, let the sheep go to the sunny places outdoors to bask in the sun, increase the light and strengthen the body. Grasp the favorable opportunity for ewes to conceive lambs, and take preventive medicine for affected sheep from 30 days before birth to eliminate the disease. Take 0.5g glucose calcium tablets, 8 tablets at a time, 3 times a day, and add vitamin D to promote calcium absorption and maintain the stability of blood calcium content in sheep. Take medicine until delivery, and take more medicine for lean and weak old sheep.

2. Strictly control the amount of postpartum milking to avoid paralysis caused by calcium loss.

On the first day after delivery, the milk production should be controlled to make the lambs drink. On the second day, the milk production should be less than 1/2 of the daily milk production, on the third day, and on the fourth day, the milk production should be less than 3/4 of the daily milk production. On the fifth day, the milk production should be determined according to the health of the sheep. If the sheep are healthy and have normal appetite, milk can be completely milked.

3. Once the disease occurs, it should be prevented and treated immediately.

The health condition of the sheep should be closely observed after delivery. It is found that the sheep likes to lie down, get up on the ground and walk difficultly. Sometimes the two hind limbs slip, which is a sign of paralysis, and must be treated immediately. Once the sheep are paralyzed, the treatment will be ineffective. Take orally calcium gluconate oral liquid with quick absorption, 50ml once, twice a day. Intravenous injection of calcium chloride or 10% calcium gluconate injection, 40ml once, twice a day. Subcutaneous injection of calcium Vitiline, 5ml once a day, continuous prevention and treatment until recovery.
